Many people who have experienced serious crimes or domestic violence in the United States don’t know that they may qualify for certain immigration protections. Two of the most common are the U Visa and VAWA.

The U Visa is for individuals who have been victims of specific crimes such as assault, domestic violence, sexual abuse, kidnapping, and others. This visa recognizes the bravery of those who cooperate with law enforcement and allows them, over time, to apply for lawful permanent residence.

VAWA allows certain individuals who have suffered physical or emotional abuse by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse or parent to file an immigration petition without the knowledge or involvement of the abuser.

At CALIA, we support those who cannot afford an attorney but need help understanding the process and preparing their application properly. While we are not attorneys and do not offer legal advice, we have experience assisting individuals through this journey, and some of the cases we’ve supported have already received bona fide determinations.

Our goal is simple: no one should go without help because of a lack of resources or information.
