Our Team
As the son and grandson of immigrants, Hugo grew up witnessing the legal and emotional challenges faced by those without lawful status, many of whom were his neighbors, relatives, and friends. These experiences shaped his understanding of how deeply immigration status impacts not only individuals, but entire families and communities.
With over four years of experience working in an immigration law office, Hugo launched CALIA to assist with application preparation and expand access to trusted, culturally informed support, especially for those who cannot afford legal representation. Through CALIA, he provides direct help with immigration forms and leads community outreach across Los Angeles.
As an aspiring attorney, CALIA reflects Hugo’s belief that meaningful change can’t wait. His work bridges a critical gap between underserved immigrants and the complex legal systems that affect their lives, offering trusted support grounded in experience, empathy, and action.
Hugo Calvillo is the founder of CALIA (Calvillo Action for Legal Immigration Access), a grassroots initiative rooted in his personal experience and deep commitment to his community.
